POKOTABI / Kikuzuki
御菓子司 喜久月
Discover Kikuzuki in Yanaka 6-chome, renowned for signature sweets like Aochi plum, yuzu mochi, and seasonal nerikiri suited for tea gatherings and gifts.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Shaped like an unripe green plum, Aochi is an eye-catching traditional confection that charms on unwrapping and delights with an alluring sweet-and-savory contrast on the tongue. Soft gyuhi—a tender, translucent mochi paste—encloses savory miso bean paste accented with a gentle saltiness and rich depth. Unlike standard overly sweet fresh confections, it leaves a clean, crisp finish, making it equally fitting beside a bowl of green tea or packaged as a thoughtful small gift.
Set along Kototoi-dori in Taito Ward's Yanaka district, Kikuzuki stands out through the atmospheric architecture of an old rowhouse. Inside, the shop's glass showcase features an assortment of sweets crafted for different occasions alongside its signature Aochi. Among the regulars' favorites is yuzu mochi, in which finely diced candied yuzu peel is kneaded directly into a soft dough of shiratamako glutinous rice flour, releasing a vibrant citrus perfume with every bite.
The counter also presents delicate jo-namagashi that evoke the shifting seasons, alongside rustic steamed miso buns and kumquat confections. Customers can comfortably pick up single items starting from 1 piece for an afternoon cup of tea at home. Stopping by while strolling through Yanaka to select a few treats for later in the day is a quiet pleasure in itself.
